Everyone wants luscious locks! And part of getting the healthy hair you crave is making sure it’s hydrated and moisturized. That’s why we’re here to tell you how to moisturize your hair.

We’ll go over why your hair is dry in the first place, and then we’ll jump straight to eight tips for how to moisturize hair naturally and easily!

Why Your Hair Is Dry

Your scalp produces a good kind of oil called sebum. This is what makes its way down your hair shaft to moisturize your hair and keep it strong, shiny, and soft. If there isn’t enough sebum, you can end up with dryness.

The cuticle on each strand of hair also has a job to do — protect the hair and keep moisture in. If the cuticle is not doing its job, moisture is whisked away from your hair more easily.

While we can’t tell you for sure why your hair is dry, we can give you a couple of ideas.

First of all, some people simply have naturally dry hair. But there are also a few outside factors that can play a part. We’ll mention three: shampoo, dry heat, and weather.

Shampoo

Remember the sebum we just mentioned that moisturizes your hair? When shampoo does away with dirt, sweat, and leftover hair products, it also strips away sebum.

This is why shampooing your hair too frequently can make it dry.

Plus, the type of shampoo you use and the ingredients it contains could dry out your scalp and hair even more.

Dry Heat

Heat dries out your hair. If your blow dryer, flat iron, and curling iron immediately came to mind, you’re thinking correctly!

While these tools can help you achieve the perfect style, the dry heat they put off contributes to sucking needed moisture out of your hair.

Weather

There’s another type of heat that can dry out your hair: hot weather! The heat and the sun shining down on your hair can also make it difficult for your locks to retain the moisture they need.

But it’s not just the hot weather. Cold, dry air and wind can also do a number on your mane.

Since multiple factors can contribute to dry hair, it’s sometimes difficult to find one on which to pin the blame. Regardless, your task now is to hydrate your hair!

Here are our tips on how to moisturize hair no matter the cause of dryness.

How To Moisturize Hair For Luscious Locks

1) Don’t Shampoo Every Day

Washing away sweat, dirt, and grime is necessary. However, as we mentioned, shampooing your hair strips both your scalp and your hair of the healthy oil called sebum.

This is why it’s not ideal to shampoo your hair every single day!

2) Use A Gentle Shampoo

When it is time to shampoo your hair, make sure you’re using a gentle, natural shampoo. You want to use a shampoo that’s made without harmful chemicals and detergents so that it isn’t extra-drying to your hair.

Look for a product that’s free of SLS, sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicone, and synthetic fragrances. Some of these ingredients are not only drying to your skin and hair but also potentially harmful to your body.

Here at Babo Botanicals, we’ve chosen to stay away from those ingredients altogether!

If you’re not sure where to start when choosing a safe, gentle shampoo, try our Smoothing Detangling Shampoo & Wash. It’s a must-have for anyone dealing with hair licks, knots, tangles, or frizz.

3) Use A Moisturizing Conditioner

Conditioning your hair after shampooing is essential for keeping it moisturized, but shampooing without conditioning is a hair care no-no!

Just like the right shampoo is important for your hair and overall health, so is the right conditioner. Use one that will moisturize your hair with natural ingredients and contains no harmful chemicals or fragrances.

And make sure you’re conditioning correctly! If you aren’t sure what that means, check out our article on how to use conditioner.

When it comes to choosing a conditioner, Babo Botanicals has several natural options for you. Our Smoothing Detangling Conditioner detangles and smoothes unruly hair with evening primrose oil, provitamin B, and coconut oil.

4) Moisturize Regularly

We’ve already gone over the fact that shampooing every day dries out your hair and that every time you shampoo you need to condition.

But the thing worth mentioning is that while you shouldn’t shampoo without conditioning your hair, you can condition without shampooing!

Just because you conditioned your hair last time you shampooed doesn’t necessarily mean your hair is moisturized for days to come. Instead, you need to moisturize regularly.

Water hydrates your hair, and oil seals that hydration in. So, there are a couple of different ways to moisturize your hair on a regular basis.

One option is to condition your hair when you take a shower, even if you don’t shampoo it. You’ll have to experiment with this to see if it works for your hair type.

Another option is to use a spray bottle to spritz your hair with water or a mixture of water and aloe vera or water and a light oil. If you choose to use only water, seal that hydration into your hair by applying a natural oil, like jojoba oil, afterward.

5) Add A Spray-In Conditioner To Your Routine

If your current routine isn’t working for you, why not switch it up by adding a spray-in conditioner, like our Smoothing Detangling Spray? Simply spray it into your hair as needed after showering.

If your hair needs an extra boost, you can use this leave-in conditioner in the morning to smooth bedhead and any other time to revive tired curls!

6) Cover Your Hair

We mentioned that one of the potential culprits of your dry hair could be the elements — the hot sun, dry air, and the like. To help protect your hair from the elements, cover it when you’re outside.

For example, wear a bandana, headscarf, or hat while you’re at the beach or the pool. Wearing a hat if you’ll be in the sun for a long time is a good idea anyway since it protects your face from the harmful rays of the sun. That being said, face sunscreen is still a must!

But back to your hair.

Another way to protect your hair from pool and beach days: coat it with conditioner or oil before hopping in the pool or taking a dip in the ocean.

7) Turn Down The Heat

If curling your hair makes you happy, you do you! To help your hair retain moisture, we’d simply encourage you to turn down the heat on your blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron and apply a protective product before styling.

But, if you feel like trying something new, take a break from hair dryers and flat irons altogether and embrace natural hairstyles!

8) Sleep On A Satin Or Silk Pillowcase

You’re a queen — or king! We know it and you know it. But that’s not why we recommend sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase.

Resting your head on silk or satin while you sleep can actually tame your hair and help it retain moisture. As opposed to cotton, these fabrics don’t cause as much friction when your hair rubs against them, and they don’t absorb as much moisture.
