Zinc Oxide Sunscreens

About Babo Botanicals Sun Care

With all the information out there about sun care dos and don'ts, it can be hard to know where to start. At Babo Botanicals, we've worked hard to create a line of sunscreens that are safe, effective, great for the skin, and perfect for babies and adults alike. We keep our sunscreens simple, focusing on the most essential, pure ingredients. So get out there and enjoy the sun! We've got you covered.

All Babo Botanicals sunscreens are:

  • SPF 30+
  • zinc-oxide based
  • non-nano
  • broad spectrum

What is SPF?

SPF is Sun Protection Factor, and i's a measure of how much longer you can stay in the sun than if you weren't wearing sun protection. For example, if you would normally burn in 10 minutes, it would take 300 minutes for you to get the same burn wearing SPF 30. However, there are many factors that affect this measurement, and while SPF is a good starting point, it's not an effective tool in itself. Here's why:

  • SPF measurements don't take the elements into account. Even the strongest sport sunscreens can be partially rubbed or washed off, and this minimizes their efficacy.
  • SPF applies only to UVB rays. Zinc oxide does protect against UVA rays, but at this point, there's no metric to incorporate its protection into the SPF rating.

For these reasons, we encourage you to start with a good SPF of 15 or 30 (regardless of skin tone), but look beyond the SPF, too.

Why zinc? And what makes Babo different from other brands?

Zinc oxide is the leading filter for UVA and UVB rays (and even UVC rays). It is considered the most safe and effective active available. As a single ingredient, it protects against all rays and sits on top of the skin to form a formidable barrier. Zinc is an expensive ingredient so it is often combined with other UV blockers, but in Babo products, we pack in a full 22%.

Isn't zinc white? And will it irritate the skin?

We're especially excited about our formula because it's non-greasy and goes on clear. We've packed it with organic ingredients that are great for your skin, and our unique botanical moisturizing formula creates one of the few products on the market that offers protection from both sun and wind. Our sunscreens are a hit with image conscious teens too, because they go on clear and don't aggravate the skin.

What's the difference between chemical sunscreens and mineral sunscreens?

Chemical sunscreens use substances like oxybenzone that permeate the skin and go into the bloodstream. Mineral sunscreens create an external barrier to protect the skin without permeation. Babo sunscreens are mineral sunscreens.

What does non-nano mean?

A nano particle is any particle smaller than than 100 nanometers, or 100 billionths of a meter. Particles that small create a risk that they'll permeate the skin. When a sunscreen is "non-nano" it means that it won't permeate the skin, and creates a safe protective barrier.

What does broad spectrum mean?

A broad spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Is it safe for a newborn? Or for my child with allergies?

The younger your baby, the less defense their skin has against the sun. For this reason, it's best to keep your newborn out of the sun as much as possible. We recommend checking in with your pediatrician before using any sunscreen on a child less than six months old. But if you must use sunscreen on a newborn, Babo's all-natural formulas are a great choice.

Our sunscreens have very few ingredients, and are gluten, soy, and tree nut free. Check the ingredients to make sure the product is free of the allergen, or give our customer service line a call.

Why is it so important to put sunscreen on babies and children? What else should I do to protect their skin from the sun?

Children are far more at risk than adults when it comes to sun damage. Here are a few reasons why:

  • The pigmentation cells in the skin of babies and children are sparse. This leaves their skin at greater risk for sun damage.
  • The protective immune system cells are less effective and more sensitive to UV light.
  • There is less cellular cohesion, and this allows the sun's rays to penetrate the skin more easily.
  • The sebaceous glands, which act as a protective barrier in the skin later in life, do not mature fully until the age of 7 years.

The best sun care is a hat and protective clothing. Try to plan around the sun, and to avoid being outside when the sun is directly overhead. But when you are out in the sun, layer up with Babo, and reapply at least every two hours.

What's the difference between the fragrance-free sunscreen (yellow tube) and the original formula sunscreen (green tube)?

Both of our formulas are great for the whole family, and are perfect for sensitive skin. Our original formula sunscreen has a light apple scent and our fragrance-free sunscreen is an option for people that want an unscented lotion or sport stick.
