First, we’ll explain what this ingredient is by breaking it down into its two parts: non-nano and zinc oxide.
What Is Zinc Oxide?
Zinc oxide is a mineral, and it’s one of the main active ingredients in many mineral sunscreens. An active ingredient in sunscreen is the ingredient that actually does the work of protecting your skin from the sun’s damaging rays.
Obviously, that’s a very important job!
Zinc oxide sits on top of your skin (rather than soaking in, like chemical sunscreens do) and protects you by scattering, absorbing, and reflecting the sun’s rays.
It can stand alone as a sunscreen because it is truly effective against UVA and UVB rays — this is called a “broad-spectrum blocker.” But zinc oxide isn’t just effective at blocking the sun! It’s also good for your skin.
Other Ways Zinc Oxide Is Used
In this article, we’ll focus on how zinc oxide is used in sunscreen, but you should also know that zinc oxide has been widely used in diaper creams because of its safety and effectiveness.
This cloth diaper-friendly cream is also made with nourishing shea and cocoa butter to soothe skin irritation and provide a protective moisture barrier for your little one’s skin.
But enough about diaper cream for now! Let’s get back to sunscreen.
Now that you know what zinc oxide is, what about the “non-nano” part?
What Does Non-Nano Mean?
Nano comes from the Greek word “nanos” and means “dwarf.” The term “non-nano” refers to nanometers.
One nanometre is one-billionth of a meter, meaning a nanoparticle is a particle smaller than 100 nanometers. Therefore, a non-nano particle is larger than 100 nanometers.
The EU defines nanomaterials as natural, incidental, or manufactured materials that contain particles where greater than 50% of the particles in the number size distribution, one or more external dimensions is in the size range 1 nm - 100 nm.
In simple terms: a nanoparticle is super small. Non-nano refers to particles that aren’t so tiny. And, it turns out, non-nano is what you want when it comes to mineral sunscreen.
Why? Good question. Let’s talk about why non-nano and zinc oxide are both the best choices when it comes to sunscreen.
Why Is Non-Nano Zinc Oxide Safe And Effective?
When choosing a sunscreen, you want to find one that is both safe and effective.
When we say “safe,” we’re talking about a sunscreen that won’t irritate your skin or harm your body. And when we say “effective,” we’re talking about a sunscreen that effectively protects you from the rays of the sun.
But why is zinc oxide safe, you ask?
Health advocates, like Amy Myers, MD (www.DrAmyMyers.com), believe zinc oxide sunscreens are better for your body than either chemical-based sunscreens or exposing your skin to the sun without sunscreen.
Here, we’ll explain why non-nano zinc oxide is the safe and effective choice.
Chemical Versus Mineral Sunscreen
There are two types of sunscreens: chemical and mineral. Zinc oxide falls under the “mineral” category.
The other active ingredient used in mineral sunscreens is titanium dioxide. These two ingredients are currently the only two active ingredients (for both chemical and mineral sunscreens) that are “proposed to be safe and effective for sunscreen use” according to the FDA.
Why is mineral sunscreen safer than chemical sunscreen? The active ingredients in chemical sunscreen can damage your body as they soak in through your skin. Plus, they can be bad for the sea creatures we love so much!
Oxybenzone — one of the most common active ingredients in chemical sunscreens — is a hormone disruptor, and it contributes to coral reef bleaching when it’s washed off in the ocean.
Not to mention it can be quite irritating to your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin.
So, mineral sunscreen is the way to go!
And zinc oxide is the best of the two mineral sunscreen active ingredients because it is truly a broad-spectrum blocker. That means it protects you and your family from both UVA and UVB rays.
Titanium dioxide does a good job of keeping UVB rays out, but it’s not as effective when it comes to UVA rays.
In addition to chemical vs. mineral sunscreen, it’s also important to know the difference between natural vs. organic sunscreen. Natural sunscreen typically refers to mineral sunscreens because they contain the active ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Organic sunscreen, on the other hand, refers to chemical sunscreen, and they contain chemical ingredients, like avobenzone and oxybenzone. Chemical sunscreen will provide good sun protection, but its ingredients aren’t ideal for your body or the environment. So, when in doubt, choose natural (or mineral) sunscreen over chemical sunscreen.
Nano Versus Non-Nano Particles
Now that we know zinc oxide is the winning ingredient, we need to take it one step further and talk specifically about nano and non-nano particles. This has to do with sunscreen safety, not effectiveness.
The concern with these super-small nanoparticles is that they can find their way into your body by penetrating your skin and getting into your bloodstream. And while a nanoparticle will enter your bloodstream, a non-nano particle won’t. For that reason, non-nano is considered safer.
While there’s not enough data to prove this theory, here at Babo Botanicals, we don’t think it’s worth the risk. Plus, nano-sized particles are so small that they can be ingested by coral reefs, and we don’t want that either.
Having said all of that, we recommend mineral sunscreen made with non-nano particles.
We’re happy to say that all of our sunscreens boast a “Non-Nano” label, making it easy for you to choose a sunscreen at a glance!
But to ensure that your sunscreen is properly doing its job, it’s also imperative that you don’t use expired sunscreen. Expired sunscreen won’t work as effectively at protecting you from sun damage and it can also contain bacteria that can be irritating to your skin
So before you go ahead and use that sunscreen that’s been sitting in the back of your bathroom cabinet since forever, make sure you check the expiration date. Expired sunscreens will typically look more yellow in color or have a liquidy or grainy texture.
Non-Nano Zinc Oxide FAQs
Here are some helpful FAQs so that you can have a better understanding of why non-nano zinc oxide sunscreen is the best type of sunscreen to use.
What Is Non-Nano Zinc Oxide Used For?
Non-nano zinc oxide is used in sunscreens to provide broad-spectrum coverage that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Zinc oxide is one of the best ingredients to use in sunscreen, and non-nano zinc oxide guarantees that you’ll reap all the benefits of zinc oxide in the safest and most effective way possible.
Non-nano zinc oxide sunscreen essentially means that the zinc oxide particles in the sunscreen aren’t small enough to absorb into the skin, so it’s a much safer option to use.
Is Non-Nano Zinc Oxide Good For Skin?
Yes, non-nano zinc oxide sunscreen is one of the best sunscreens to use for your skin. This is because the zinc oxide particles won’t get absorbed by your skin and go into your bloodstream, which can happen with other types of nano sunscreens.
Non-nano sunscreen is also better to use during pregnancy, as some of the ingredients in sunscreens can be toxic if they get absorbed into your bloodstream or enter into your lungs.
Is All Zinc Oxide Non-Nano?
No, not all zinc oxide is non-nano. A nanoparticle is a small particle that ranges between 1 to 100 nanometres in size. Undetectable by the human eye, nanoparticles can exhibit significantly different physical and chemical properties to their larger material counterparts.
The definition given by the European Commission states that the particle size of at least half of the particles in the number size distribution must measure 100 nm or below. Most nanoparticles are made up of only a few hundred atoms.
Non-nano zinc sunscreen is a much safer option to use because it means that the zinc oxide particles won’t enter into your blood system or your lungs.
What Is Non-Nano Zinc Oxide?
Zinc Oxide comes from a natural mineral source and is used mainly for sun protection. Non-nano zinc oxide is made out of zinc oxide particles that are at least 100 nanometers big. Most mineral sunscreens are made out of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and it’s crucial to choose a sunscreen that has non-nano zinc oxide particles.
