Since I was born, my family has been coming to Martha’s Vineyard during the summer. What I love about here, is 41 years later, not much has changed. The erosion has been substantial along the coast line, especially in the last 5 years, but other than that, the same stores, restaurants, clean airy breeze and beautiful beaches remain the same.
We eat nothing but fish here. We often catch it ourselves. When we don’t, we love to go to Larsens, a family run fish store which opened in 1969. Here we choose the catch of the day and line up for their scrumtuous clam chowder. My son loves to fish and here the kids are attempting to catch minows off of the dock.
Another favorite is the Home Port restaurant, serving lobster and mussels. My brother worked here when he was 15 years old as a dishwasher. Now all these 15 year olds remind me of my teen years. Back then, I worked as a salesperson across the street at a clothing store called Pandora’s Box. I would meet up every afternoon with the Homeport crew.
My favorite favorite place is Chilmark Chocoloates. Special needs people of all ages make the delisoius chocolate and it tastes like nothing I have ever had. The chocoloate covered blueberries burst with freshness. And they make a chocolate with grapenuts in it. So crunchy! My kids like the chocolate lollipops of course!
I feel blessed to be able to show my kids what I used to love. There is nothing more gratifying than reliving the memories through them. Martha’s Vineyard makes me feel like I am so young. My 102 year old grandfather and 93 year old grandmother are also here with us. Every morning, the kids take a worm walk (they collect worms on the way) to get the newspaper at the end of the road and bring it to them to read. I think my grandfather & grandmother feel pretty young too being here!
