EWG Sunscreen
With an overload of information coming at consumers every second of the day, it can be downright impossible to try and figure out what skincare products are right for you and your family. What products are good for environment while also being good for your skin? That’s where the Environmental Working Group (EWG) comes in.
What is EWG?
The EWG is an environmental organization founded in the early 1990s that researches environmental issues, like toxic chemicals, and advocates to protect everyday Americans and the environment. On their website, they go into more detail about the nonprofit: “The Environmental Working Group’s mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. With breakthrough research and education, we drive consumer choice and civic action. We are a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment.”
They make it clear on their website as well that they have helped to change the debate on environmental health on Capitol Hill, and have made it easier for consumers to become more informed about the products that they buy. “In response to consumer pressure, companies are giving up potentially dangerous chemical ingredients in their products and improving their practices,” the EWG says on their website. They want the American people to know what exactly is in common household items, from shampoo and food, to the very water that people drink out of the tap and the air that people breathe.
Why does EWG matter?
For the most part, many Americans probably don’t think about what is in their tap water, or even where it comes from — they just trust that it’s safe to drink. The EWG is important in American daily life, and an important part of the debate on public health. They have created a cosmetics safety database so consumers can see what exactly is in a particular cosmetic that they might use daily. They have published information on pesticide use in the United States, as well as a national database for tap water testing, and they track and report on things like mining and fracking nationwide.
